Upward Bound – PAL Charter Academy

Program Mission

Provisional Educational Services Inc. (PESI) provides San Bernardino City Unified School District with an Upward Bound program. The Program builds, encourages, motivates, and creates an atmosphere for learning. We provide students with the skills necessary to successfully pursue and complete post-secondary education.

Upward Bound is an academic enrichment program that opens the windows of opportunity to postsecondary education. Upward Bound is a federally funded program that provides its services free to selected students.

The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to academically prepare low-income, first-generation college students to enroll and graduate from the four-year college/ university of their choice.

The Upward Bound Program is grant funded by the U. S. Department of Education

Students must complete an Upward Bound application for program eligibility as shown below:

Be a rising 9th-11th grade student at San Bernardino High School.
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Meet federal low-income guidelines and be first-generation students (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university.)
Have the potential and desire to attend college but need additional academic support.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Participate in the program throughout their
years in high school.
Participate in the academic enrichment programs to improve your high school course performance.
Attend the Saturday Academy twice a month.
Attend a six-week Summer Academy.
Enroll in the following A-G college preparatory high school classes.
Maintain good academic standing in all classes (a GPA of 2.5).

PARENT/GUARDIAN REQUIREMENTS

Attend parent workshops designed to provide support and understanding of the educational process.
Attend program orientations and awards ceremonies.

ACADEMIC YEAR

Academic assistance in a variety of teaching formats throughout their high school years.
Academic advising and guidance including grade monitoring and academic interventions.
Assistance for juniors and seniors regarding college applications, financial aid, scholarships, and preparation for college entrance examinations.
Assistance and training in financial literacy (budgeting and money management).
Social, cultural, and educational field trips to Southern/Northern California and other exciting places.
College tours to four-year colleges and universities in California.
Awards Ceremony where students’ achievements are recognized.

Summer

A six-week Summer Academy with high school credit. Classes are designed to give students a head start for the upcoming year, thus providing an academic advantage. Classes meet Monday-Friday; field trips or community service activities are conducted.

Academic needs assessment.
Access to an educational resources in Languages and “Hands-on Science” projects.
College tours, field trips, and cultural/educational activities.
Preparation for the SAT / ACT and other types of assessments.

Upward Bound Students and Parents/Guardians:

As of Wednesday, March 18, 2020 in response to COVID-19 concerns, our Program will NOT provide face to face services. All Upward Bound Program services will shift to on-line and will be conducted via distant-learning format effective Monday, March 23, 2020

Students meetings with Educational Coaches via distant-learning format using Ring Central Meeting. Upward Bound student will need to install the Ring Central Meeting Application. Call the office if experience problems with the install.
